Ubuntu 8.04 OpenOffice 3.0.1 Australian Spellchecking

I just removed all the standard Ubuntu 8.04 OpenOffice 2.4.1 packages and installed Openoffice from Openoffice.org’s download area by following the howto here.

After going into Tools ==> Options ==> Language Settings ==> Languages and setting everything to English (Australian) I gave a document a test to see if spell checking was working and it failed to underline or even check the spelling.

The fix:
Download and Install the Australian Dictionary from here http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/AustralianDictionary

When you do the download Firefox seems to recognize that it has to be opened in OpenOffice and the Install is automatic.

Once it’s installed and your set to “English (Australian)” you get the squiggly lines under your text as you would expect.

Thanks heaps man, I’ve been waiting for a while for this to be available… I didn’t even realise there were Firefox-like extensions for OpenOffice.org! Cheers!

I already tried this and it didnt work. i’m using xp pro sp3 and a gtk envirionment installed for pidgin if that matters. under language of “user interface” it has default, option to change to English USA only. Can’t believe OO is so slick yet can’t even check spelling, but thats open source isnt it, stumble on the simple stuff.

edit: don’t let firefox open this with OO. save to disk, then open with extension manager and load it. Make sure you exit “quickstarter” or reboot for changes to take effect.
