Just use the supported versions and save yourself the headaches

Favourite Linux

I love using the latest Fedora operating system on bare metal. I get to play with the latest bells and whistles.

Challenges with Using Bleeding Edge Releases

However when I then go to populate the system with work software such as VMWare Workstation I often find that it is so bleeding edge that I need to use some sort of hack to install it.

All well and good but sometimes you just need to be on a reliable firm foundation and not worry about stability.

So I installed Fedora 33 and found that my Windows 10 Pro VM Guest was freezy and grabby. I’m not sure if this was because of having the new default btrfs installed or any number of other possible issues.

For Running a Business You Need a Stable Base

So to try and get back to a stable base I tried to install CentOS 8.x but found that it doesn’t have native btrfs support and then I went to the VMWare Supported Host Operating Systems for VMWare Workstation Pro 16 and found the options I could use. I ended up on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and it appears to run the VMWare Guest well.

But the takeway lesson for business software, and I’ve known and abided by this for my clients for many years, but for myself I’ve always been adventurous is to use the validated by the vendor system and software configuration to hopefully gaurantee better stability.
