I’ve had this domain on dreamhost.com’s shared hosting for a few years. It’s been OK. For the dollar value it’s got a lot of features.

  • Linux Shell access (woo hoo!)
  • One click install of a heap of opensource stuff
  • Unlimited Disk space (meaning you can have more than a couple of hundred megabytes of disk space)

The problem I am finding with my current shared hosting account is that my installation of Gallery 3 keeps getting it’s imagemagick resize processes knocked on the head and I end up with mega large thumbnails because my images don’t resize properly

So the answer? Hmmm.

Dreamhost provides a Virtual Private Server solution.

So I just logged into my dreamhost web panel and requested a VPS which will provide protected memory and resources, and my Gallery 3 install will be able to be greedy — to the limit of my VPS at least — without suffering from the Linux Process Control version of whack-a-mole.

Adding the monthly hosting fee of $8.95USD to $15USD it costs for the VPS at it lowest settings brings one to 23.95 per month. So for less than a dollar a day you get what amounts to a full Linux environment in a data centre. Not bad.

Now I just hope that it’s reliable and uptime is good.
