Telstra HTC Desire Gingerbread Upgrade Canned

Written by James McDonald

Just checked Telstra smartphone upgrade page and discovered some bad news about my HTC Desire

“HTC will no longer proceed with a mass-market Gingerbread update for Desire due to the memory requirements of Android 2.3”

Reading elsewhere I heard that they had trouble integrating the HTC Sense UI component.

So seeing as Telstra has left the party without having danced with any of us HTC Desire A8183 owners. How do we most safely get Gingerbread on our phones?

I will have to ask the Google…

Hopefully I will be able to enjoy Gingerbread by replacing the current Telstra Bloatware sour dough.

Update: See comment below on how to get Android Gingerbread on your HTC Desire. (Thanks elissa123)

Go to http://www.htcdev.com/ and register to login, go to ‘Developer Centre’ tab at top, go to ‘Kernel Source Code’ See Downloads tab on right of page. Click on ‘Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) Upgrade for HTC Desire’ Download button. Unzip file, hook up phone and have htc sync running. Works like a charm all telstra stuff gone but will need to reload apps back on.

I have a question for Liss, I am downloading the 2.3 files from HTC, i have not yet loaded it onto the phone, I don’t want any of the telstra apps, so do mind loosing them but did you have any trouble with lost data, contacts in people and phone etc? I can save them to the SD, this should protect them.

Your contacts should be synced with your google account. When I switch between custom roms the contacts are downloaded from google when I sign in for the first time.

Thanks for the instruction Liss. I have installed 2.3 on my HTC Desire and it’s working fine without noticeable problems.

If you have a google mail account then your contacts sync back when you re-configure you email account

Just did the upgrade to gingerbread (2.3). the rom flash executable is not available on the HTC developers website any more. Had to find it on a 3rd party upload file storage site.
