I have been observing woeful performance when clicking on a message in my gmail inbox from Evolution 3.6.3 on Fedora 18 (and from F15-17 too btw). If I click on several messages then evolution can hang for minutes before finally downloading or just never download the message.
I have found one thing that has sped up the email downloads in Evolution and that is turning off Junk Mail checking:
Click Edit ==> Preferences ==> Mail Preferences ==> Junk Tab
Uncheck "Check incoming message for junk"
This I believe has greatly improved the download speed of my Gmail emails in Evolution.
I have been wanting to stick with Evolution because of the Outlookesque functionality the download speed / freeze problem was a show stopper but now it's tolerable.
