RS819 – No Ability to run Virtualization

So just found out that budget Synology Units can’t run Active Backup for Business if their CPU’s aren’t enabled for virtualization

The RS819 runs a Realtek RTD1296 quad-core 1.4GHz CPU and the Package Center doesn’t offer Virtual Machine Manager or Active Backup for Business.

So you can’t use this to protect a VMWare VSphere or ESXi instance

It looks like you need an Intel or AMD CPU that supports virtualization to be able to use ABfB.

So a RS422+ will do it.

Bummer Hal.

Performance

I’m not sure if it’s just the RS819 I have which is non-performant but the performance has been terrible. Can’t send Veeam Backups to an SMB share reliably without the backups failing with I/O errors.

Have tried to create an iSCSI LUN and use that as the backup target but same problem.

Currently doing a factory reset, and have removed the disks, wiped them clear with diskpart with the hope of it becoming more reliable/performant after.

Update: I ended up replacing it with an RS422+ which is now working reliably…. perhaps this particular RS819 is just a lemon.
