Fedora 32 as the Operating System seems to work fine with some changes:

  • Keyboard Video Mouse Issues
    • The NVIDIA video card with dual-monitors would lock up using the standard nouveau driver so I had to install the NVIDIA driver
      • This is the how-to I used to install the driver: https://www.if-not-true-then-false.com/2015/fedora-nvidia-guide/
      • Also found that I didn't need to do any driver signing despite running UEFI. The NVIDIA installation program just installed and worked
      • There seemed to be another issue with my wireless keyboard and mouse that could be traced back to the video driver as now I'm running the Nvidia driver the keyboard and mouse are no longer grabby
    • The Logitech Keyboard and mouse report the wrong battery levels mine says 30% for the keyboard and no information for the mouse. But they work fine
  • Applications
    • Spotify is available using a snap or flatpak. I couldn't get it running using a snap but the flatpak worked well
    • Authy is available as a snap
    • VMWare Player
      • Download the latest version >= 15.5.5. I somehow managed to get an old version and it would simply not install
      • Make sure you enable Virtualization support in the BIOS or it will exit with no error
    • I used to run Wine on my Macbook Pro but upgrades toward 64-bit only compatibility have killed that handy method of running windows apps. But now running Fedora 32 I can use Wine and Windows apps again without firing up a VM
    • NetworkManager OpenVPN
      • TheĀ ovpn file import works fine but when you later try to edit the settings, it applies validation that causes the Apply button to be greyed out. I found work-a-rounds for the following situations:
        • When a route is specified in the ovpn file you need to put 0.0.0.0 in the default gateway to make the Apply button to be available
        • When using Password with Certificates(TLS) Authentication Type you need to specify a key even if this is not needed when using openvpn from the command line or other (Windows / Android) clients
